La Digue 15-07-2014 47 year-old dies from burns A little over a month and half after having been the victim of a fire, David Ernesta, a carpenter from La Passe on La Digue, has succumbed to his injuries in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Victoria Hospital, the police said in a statement yesterday. Mr. Ernesta sustained extensive burns on June 27, at the Bristol family residence, when a can of tinner exploded while he was preparing a fire in an open store that doubled as a kitchen. Duty officers at La Digue Police Station were informed of the incident at 0650pm and Mr Ernesta was transported to La Digue Logan Hospital for medical assistance before being flown to Mahé. Shortly after his arrival at Victoria Hospital he was admitted to the ICU. The police are awaiting the conclusion of the postmortem examination to establish the exact causes of his death before wrapping up its investigation. The police, along with the Fire and Rescue Services Agency, call on the general public to remain vigilant at all times when dealing with fire.
