Lab Technician, Biodiesel Refinery Greenleaf Biofuels, LLC - New Haven, CT The Lab Technician is responsible for maintaining a neat and sterile Lab. This position also takes samples and analyzes them to ensure that the Companys quality levels are met or exceeded. The Lab Technician also assists the QC (Quality Control) Manager with developing and maintaining detailed SOPs for various lab tests, and with training staff members. Finally, this position will record, report and manage test results, and prepare exact written and numerical records and inspection reports. Specific duties include, but are not limited to: Sampling & Testing: Take samples and analyzes them for acceptable quality in production. Conduct standard chemical and physical tests of solids, liquids, and gases. Investigate cause(s) of quality failures. Assist the QC Manager with establishing metrics for process capability and measurement quality, and utilize metrics as needed. Lab Maintenance: Ensure that the Lab is in compliance with all safety and environmental requirements to the highest standards under federal and state law. Ensure that all lab testing supplies are in-stock, and report any shortages to the QC Manager. Maintain all Lab equipment, troubleshoot potential equipment problems, and report concerns. SOPs & Staff Training: Assist the QC Manager with formulating practices, policies, methods and procedures to ensure high quality operations. Assist the QC Manager with creating standard quality and reliability expectancy for finished products. Assist the QC Manager with implementing new processes and procedures with the staff. Nonessential Functions: Work in other areas of Operations as needed, assemble and operate new analytical equipment as requested, and handle various projects and activities. Education Level: High school degree, or equivalent experience. Some college preferred. Experience: Minimum of six (6) months of experience in lab management or quality control, or a related position, preferably in a biodiesel, oil and gas, petrochemical, or a related industry. Success Factors (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities): Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. Able to effectively convey detailed spoken instructions to coworkers and communicate effectively. Strong safety practices and ability to respond to normal hazards appropriately. Able to read, write and speak English fluently. Able to make plans independently – Hands-on approach and self-directed. Computer proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook, and ability to learn QC applications. Ability to understand instructions and underlying principles, provided in written, oral, and/or diagrammatic manner. Understanding of EPA, DOT, OSHA, and state regulations. A valid drivers license and a TWIC card (TWIC can be obtained after employment). Physical Requirements: Match and/or discriminate between colors in terms of hue, saturation, and brilliance; identify a particular color or color combination from memory; and perceive contrasting color combinations. Frequent walking, standing, sitting and use of computer. Stooping and bending. Ability to lift at least 20 lbs and move up to 50 lbs. Climbing up to 65 feet. Ability to coordinate eyes, hands and fingers rapidly and accurately to make precise movements with speed and accuracy. Able to adjust the lens of the eye to bring an object into sharp focus when doing near point work at varying distances from the eye. Ability to manage contact/exposure to chemicals ordinarily found in a biodiesel testing laboratory. This position is ‘on call’ as necessary 24 hours per day, every day of the year. All candidates and must adhere to Greenleaf Biofuels’ drug testing program.
