Labor: expenditure of physical or mental effort especially when difficult or compulsory. Human activity that provides the goods or services in an economy. The services performed by workers for wages as distinguished from those rendered by entrepreneurs for profits. Heck, who wants to do any of that today? Therefore, I make a motion to change the name of the holiday to "Anti-Labor Day" and still have it as an official paid holiday. But the current name is self defeatist and contrary.
