Lane takes powerful victory over Taft ~ Chicago Sun-Times October 5, 1986 | John Montgomery Lane Tech coach Sam Bronswick took one look at the turf - or the lack of it - before yesterdays game at Lane Stadium and decided to abandon his option offense and play straight power football. The defending Public League champion (3-2, 2-0) rushed the ball 43 times for 227 yards en route to a 24-0 victory over Taft in North Section play. We went with our muddy day offense today, Bronswick said. Taft wasnt expecting us to run our power game, and they really werent geared to stop it. I came out, looked at the field before the game and thought: `You cant even walk on this field. How are you going to run on it? Lanes Derrick Faulkner and Dwight Gunn didnt appear to have any trouble with the mud. Faulkner (16 carries, 127 yards) ran 19 yards to score with 2:11 left in the first quarter. Faulkner has got good speed and hes strong, Bronswick said. Hes got the potential to be a real good running back. He is the type of guy who can make a big play on one run with that speed. Quarterback Steve Rhee boosted Lanes lead to 12-0 on a four-yard run with 2:11 remaining in the half. Faulkner flashed his big-play ability on a 43-yard TD run in the third period which gave Lane a 18-0 bulge. I like Faulkner and hes a good back, Taft coach Dave Zalinski said. I guess you can say he has big feet and was able to stay on top of the mud. Gunn (seven carries, 91 yards) scored the final TD on a 43-yard run in the third period. I asked Gunn before the game if he could walk on water and he said: `Yea, coach, Bronswick said. Lanes running attack was helped by tackles John Trumbulovic and Miro Srdanovich, guards Todd Schwager and Antonio Howard and center David Frank. We werent able to run our option on a muddy field, so we ran our power offense just like we did last year when we beat CVS in the playoffs, Bronswick said. What can you say? They blew us away, Zalinski said. The weather hurt us more than it hurt them, because we like to throw the ball. Lanes defense, led by linebackers Schwager, Louis Giovannetti and Rudy Salinas, limited Taft (3-2, 1-1) to 18 yards and two first downs. You know who we played at the beginning of the season, Bronswick said, referring to his 0-2 start. Both Gordon Tech and St. Patrick are state-ranked teams. Our philosophy is to play some tough ones at the beginning of the season and give our kids experience.
