The Food and Drug Administration has warned that these chicken tenders, strips or treats imported from China contain an unknown poison that has made thousands of pet dogs sick and has even killed 500 dogs, which suffered from kidney failure. moodboard/Thinkstock Recently a class action lawsuit was allowed to proceed in a Los Angeles federal court against a California company that sells Kingdom Pets chicken jerky dog treats. The lawsuit charges that the company knew the treats were poisonous but concealed the health concerns to pet owners. The case began when Jennifer Holt of Austin, Texas, bought a bag of Kingdom Pets chicken jerky dog treats at a local Costco. She gave the treats to her dog Tucker, a healthy 9-year-old mixed breed, one to three times a week. Her dog became sick and died from acute kidney failure, according to two veterinarians, who blamed the chicken treats. Meanwhile Kingdom Pets was promoting the dog treats as being wholesome and nutritious — with a 100% safety record. But instead, the dog treats with meat from China were actually unsafe, defective and dangerous, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit says the company knew about the consumer complaints and the FDA warning – but kept promoting the treats to increase sales. If your dog has eaten chicken jerky treats, you should look out for these symptoms of poisoning: Decreased appetite and activity Vomiting Diarrhea Increased drinking of water Call your vet if the symptoms last more than 24 hours.
