Laser cutters are the new go-to technology for people looking to - TopicsExpress

Laser cutters are the new go-to technology for people looking to set up a small business – there are a lot of us out there, and we all have our own identity. We’re distinguished by our approach to design, which market we’re aiming at and our own personal preferences and tastes. Luckily, Joburg is a big place, and there seems to be room for all of us! At Unhinged, we’re less driven by the technology side of laser cutting, and more by ideas. We dream, we talk, we Google, we sketch, we steal a little (like everything good under the sun), we wake up in the middle of the night with an amazing idea then find in the cold light of day it’s absolute rubbish. We sometimes use time and material on something that ultimately doesn’t work. But we remind ourselves that it’s necessary – we don’t want a ‘cut and paste’ product, we want something useful, pleasing and workable which bears our design stamp, and all the time we’re polishing our skills and design instinct. Our ‘Wildly Necessary’ home decor range is a good example of all of this. Was there really room for more table mats and fridge magnets in the market? Well, it turns out, the answer’s ‘yes’. We were inspired by the Karoo and plattelands look which is taking hold in decor, such as Design Team’s local-flavour fabrics, and applied laser technology to wood and paint, to create our pink and green Protea place mats, coasters, centre pieces, serviette boxes, as well as the Rock Rose and Aloe design. It took time and tweaking, but we’re chuffed that the range is selling well; it’s thrilling when you get that kind of confirmation that you’re on the right track.
