Last Friday, I attended at event, organized by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, with my daughter, Jessica Lall, at the Fairmont Hotel. It was an excellent event! Dr. Paul Farmer and Fr. Gustavo Gutierrez talked about fighting poverty in the world and delivering health care to the poor. Dr. Paul Farmer holds an MD and PhD from Harvard University. He is now a Professor at Harvard, chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Farmer has been instrumental in setting up hospitals in Rwanda and Haiti. Fr. Gutierrez’s is a Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. Fr. Gutierrez’s teachings about fighting poverty and injustice have influenced Dr. Farmer’s work. This event was attended by 1400 people – from corporations and universities. I felt inspired and energized listening to these speakers, intelligent people who are focused on serving the poor, based on the teachings from the Bible. And I am so thankful that I could have this experience with my daughter.
