Last Saturday, a friend commented on the closure of the open-air carpark at the airport. It is sad to see parking lots disappear but in replacement, there will be an equally brilliant new development coming up. That same weekend too, we saw temporary structures being built using plastic chairs for ArchiFest Singapore. So we asked ourselves if we could give more spaces the recognition and appreciation they deserve, even for just a short period, before they are wiped clean from our slate? Can we slow down or pause re-urbanisation? Can we transform spaces forgotten due to our never-ending progress, to give us a little more time to appreciate them? We took a drive around the city the following day and spotted a few unexpected pockets of spaces that might transpire into greater things. One of them is a section of the former AYE-ECP (expressway) above Prince Edward Road. This piece used to be the artery coursing through the city, linking the East and West of Singapore. This LAST PIECE now sits in a corner, and will most likely be developed much later (we hope). Can we convert this last remaining tiny section into a public space, an elevated park akin to the High Line in New York? We think a temporary mini park will be great OR perhaps it could be a permanent home to a Singapore designer collective like Keepers? After all, our Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) did state and I quote, “…there are opportunities to create unique public spaces at various levels…” and “(The) space is envisaged to be an attractive outdoor living room in our city...” A feasible thought, maybe? Let’s try to bring this idea to a grand new level. #LivingRoomSG #HighLineSG #AYE-ECP #PublicSpaceSG #LastPieceSG ideasempire/aye-ecp/
