Last Thursday I had a visit from an old friend. None other that the incredibly talented Barbara Weir. Its always such a pleasure to catch up with her. We had some time so we sat down and had a good chat about life and her upcoming exhibition at Wentworth Galleries. I think every Australian should have access to the stories of Barbara Weir. Some tragic, some heart warming and uplifting but all intriguing. One that struck a chord on this particular afternoon was about the intense fear of a small girl being hidden from the police by her aunt Emily so that she wouldnt be taken from her family. A fate that was sadly unavoidable in the end. Barbara was one of the stolen generation. Her story takes what to most, is an abstract concept of cruelty and makes it very personal and very real. Barbara offers great insight into our past and a better understanding of the fear, pain and torment perpetrated by a government against the first people of Australia from 1909 all the way up until the 1970s. That was a small snippet of a long conversation about an amazing life that couldnt possibly be covered in a single afternoon. We also spoke about her travels. For there record, there doesnt seem to be too many major cities on earth in which Barbara hasnt exhibited and visited. Barbara Weir is an inspiration - to come from such harsh conditions and such a difficult start in life to go on to become not only one of Australias, but one of the worlds great artists. It gives me great pleasure to announce Barbaras next great exhibition will be taking place at Wentworth Galleries on August 14th. Stay tuned for more information.
