Last Thursday evening, July 24th, a bulldog was found in the area. He was brought to a vet about midnight. The dog had a skin condition (mange?) and the finder wanted him checked out. He stated his intentions: that he would adopt the dog if an owner did not come forth. Friday morning, July 25th, he received a call that the dog was brought to Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge. Animal hospital stated that this was their protocol. The finder of this dog was more than willing to pay for the services from the beginning. He never dumped this dog. Finder asked for an intake number and they said they had none. Finder went directly to Animal Welfare League and was told the dog had already been euthanized. I am repeating what I have been told - and believe me, it is by a VERY reliable person. If you lost a dog - you must go IMMEDIATELY to the shelters and search for them IN PERSON. You must do this frequently. They are not honoring the 5 day stray hold. The shelters are overflowing and there is nowhere to put these animals. Scores go down (killed) every day - to make room for the new ones coming in. Such a sad thing - some of these animals have people willing to adopt them and they still go down. I could tell of several recent episodes, but whats the point. Just makes everyone feel bad. I am not here to bash the shelters. I am just trying to raise awareness. If you find a dog - PLEASE, try and hold onto him and lets all work together to find his owner. If you cant hold onto him, put a little effort in to finding someone who can. When you find a stray, make sure that the vet you take him to actually treats strays. Many do not. Ask what their protocol is. These stories are so disheartening - people just arent getting it. Try and save a life if you can. Re: the stray hold: Here is a portion of Illinois Statute 510 ILCS 5 citing the 7-Day Hold. This law is called The Illinois Animal Control Act: (510 ILCS 5/10) (from Ch. 8, par. 360) Sec. 10. Impoundment; redemption. When dogs or cats are apprehended and impounded, they must be scanned for the presence of a microchip and examined for other currently acceptable methods of identification, including, but not limited to, identification tags, tattoos, and rabies license tags. The examination for identification shall be done within 24 hours after the intake of each dog or cat. The Administrator shall make every reasonable attempt to contact the owner as defined by Section 2.16, agent, or caretaker as soon as possible. The Administrator shall give notice of not less than 7 business days to the owner, agent, or caretaker prior to disposal of the animal. My question: Why is this not being followed? Why have laws if shelters do not follow them? Get your facts - do some research. Find out how many animals are killed every day. All this information is available to you - you simply must look. I can say it 50 times a week, 50 different ways to people, and a week later they forget it. Things at the shelters do not change - they only get worse. And it all comes down to irresponsible people (pet owners, breeders, etc). Plain and simple!
