Last drill season, I had the pleasure to coach Prairie High - TopicsExpress

Last drill season, I had the pleasure to coach Prairie High Schools Crimson Falcon unarmed drill team. It was decided early on that we wanted to completely revamp the ex routine, and draw inspiration from places other teams werent. A Japanese dance/pop group called World Order ended up offering us endless inspiration and innovation, to the point that we almost did some of their sequences move-for-move, inserting only occasional stomps and beats to make it more unarmed. https://youtube/watch?v=xwg2Hpf4ta8&list=UUI4fJYWKcGa8MvnvLw0qysQ On the Nationals deck, that level of creativity and novelty stuck out in the judges minds and propelled the team to a 5th place finish for Flight Ex. Just to put that into perspective: A small unarmed team, from a little AFJROTC unit up in Washington state, having only practiced 8 HOURS PER WEEK, was able to place 5th in Flight Ex. Because they dared to be different, in a calculated and controlled way. Speaking from personal experience having spent most of my drill career as an armed driller, the vast majority of unarmed ex routines all look the same to anybody who hasnt drilled unarmed. Rarely does something stand out in a positive way. Dare yourselves to seek out sources of inspiration OUTSIDE of unarmed drill. Find ways to change the game. Make yourselves memorable. Go beyond the trophy.
