Last night I had my first Thanksgiving dinner ever outside of the United States -- at the home of eldest son Rubén and his family. The menu included a whole baked turkey, but otherwise more typically Panamanian foods, though all delicious, of course. What I found oddest was to be in Panama City in a hot evening at the end of November, eating a Thanksgiving dinner with no snow falling and no frost on the windows. I did tell the official story of the first Thanksgiving and the real one as well, which is far from the grade-school version with cute Pilgrims sitting side by side with cute Indians. (See my book The Circle of Life.)
