Last night I hired three personal chefs to make me dinner — but I only paid for my favorite. The other two were just ok, so I didnt compensate them for their time and talents. Sound ridiculous? (Well it is!) For some reason this is acceptable in my industry. I see this scenario happen over and over with designers who work for free and enter into design competitions. This practice compromises the quality for clients and takes advantage of designers. It needs to stop. A logo isn’t just a pretty symbol; it’s what represents you and your company. It is the thing that will instantly identify you and it has to convey the right message to the right people. A contest doesn’t grant designers the necessary time or compensation to undertake that research, get to know you and produce a unique design. Help me spread the word and educate yourself.
