Last night, SVT (aktuellt) brought up a report by EU on Female Genital Mutilation. FGM is barbaric and inhumane - it should never be allowed anywhere. The report estimates 180 000 girls in EU are at risk. However, this number is mainly based on how many girls are born to parents from Somalia, Mali Sudan etc. It might make sense at first but this argument is based on ignorance and stereotypes . Professor Birgitta Essén, (Senior lecturer in International Maternal Health, UU) who researched FGM for the past 15 years says research show FGM in Sweden is in decline and immigrants revalue this practice once they arrive to their new country. Professor Essén says that this kind of research should not be based purely on where people come from but their own values as individuals - it should not be based on what happens in Somalia but the reality people live in Sweden as Somalis. Well said Professor! Shame on you people for pushing on to create further stereotypes of Muslims, Africans and immigrants groups in Sweden.
