Last night, around 11PM my land line rang (a rare occurrence) and a little voice asked, is this Jackie Rudin who I went to Ohio State Univ. with, who I knew so long ago in the village? Could not believe a voice from so long ago, found me. (by dialing 411). Totally blew my mind to speak to my old friend Ricki Rosenblatt. She sounded the same, so familiar, clever, ironic and funny without knowing or trying. We met for dinner tonight and spent the last 5 hours catching up and filling in the blanks. Not sure how to describe the meaningfulness of this reunion. Someone whod met my dad and knew me as a teenager and a 20 something. Weve led very different lives but have known some of the same people at different times. Wild and comforting that this could come completely out of the blue. She was watching Billy Joel on PBS last night and remembered that I took her to see him at The Bottom Line when it was just him (no backup) singing Piano Man. She remembered I told her this guy is gonna be big! And so she called 411 and found me. After 40 years! She has no computer and is not on line, her phone is the lowest tech possible but it was all she needed to find me. Love that this life can still hold so many completely unexpected surprises. Its certainly one of the things that keeps me going. Still have chills.
