Last night at Youth group we discussed a parable of our discontented goldfish… we bought some (real) goldfish friends for our group! You see these goldfish are little rebellious little boogers. They pressed their little faces up to the glass getting mad at us because they resented the boundaries of being in the bowl. They screamed “I’m sick and tired of being stuck inside and wanted to assert their goldfish rights. We asked the youth what they thought the fish wanted. The obvious answer was, “I want to be out of here.” So we pulled a fish out of the bowl and held him up. We talked about how free the fish was now as he is sitting there dripping. We asked the youth how they thought the fish was feeling. The obvious answer was, “I need some water.” Now we had to challenge the group, “But it is his right not to be inside the boundaries of this fishbowl, don’t you think?” That’s what he wanted, right. Now we asked the youth what would happen if the goldfish got his way and was left free outside of the fishbowl? Again the obvious answer...“He’s gonna die.” Soooo we put the fish back in fishbowl. That’s why the Bible says you have the right attitude when you say, “I’m not going to assert my rights.”-1 Timothy 6:6-8. If you want to be happy, then learn to be humble, learn to swallow it sometimes and respond humbly to your parents, your teacher...we all have boundaries and they are put their for a reason and a good one at that. Let’s not complain about rules and boundaries (they only led to trouble), let’s honor them!
