Last night, we had a tow 30 miles offshore. Non member. To complicate things, there were no communications with the disabled boater and he was making a slow bell with a spun hub. Factor in wind, tide, making way of 3 knots and darkness, you could be very difficult to find. (we almost didnt go) The call had been communicated to us by a 3rd party, and he then left the scene. So, if your going to head off shore, at the very least, make sure you have a good working radio. If a 3rd party is communicating for you, have them remain on scene. Also, always anchor when its safe to do so. That way responders can find you at your last known position. Remember you can get automated radio checks on channels 26 and 27 in the state of florida. There is no reason to be offshore with no VHF communications. Its dangerous. On another note, become a member. So when you do call us on you VHF radio for a tow from offshore it doesnt cost you $1700.
