Last night we put 3 heating pads in the top of the chicken coop so my ladies didnt freeze with these frigid temps. So, I am laying in bed (its 1:30 am) and I start thinking all of my random last thoughts of the night. Then I started thinking what if those heating pads that we put out there have an auto shutoff I argue with myself for few minutes. Going from Oh, they will be alright to What if they ARE shut off and we have 15 frozen chickens in the morning... So what do I do next, you ask? I get myself out of my comfy bed put on my pants, my hubbys coat and boots. Then I march myself out to the chicken coop with a flashlight in hand, to make sure my ladies have some heat. Crazy?! Yes. It was -1 at the time with the windchill of -11 outside. But my after-midnight trip to the chicken coop was not a total waste. 2 of the 3 heating pads had shut off. My ladies were happy to see me and talked to me as I fixed their heating pads. After all of that, I could finally go to sleep knowing that I wouldnt have frozen chickens in the morning.
