Last night we watched The Young Lions. It was made in 1958. Weve both read the book--which is pretty good though not great; but Irwin Shaws short stories are gorgeous--but I hadnt seen the film. The film, unfortunately, moves a long way away from the book, and Shaw was furious about that. And was right to be furious. Nevertheless, the film is interesting. Montgomery Clift, Im sorry to say, simply plays Montgomery Clift, but Dean Martin is surprisingly effective, and Marlon Brando, who plays the German soldier. . .well, all he has to do is turn his head or say a word and the movie becomes better, deeper, darker, more surprising. Brando was a slim young thing then, and his acting is spot-on. The actresses are also good. I forgot to notice who the director was. Worth seeing if you havent, or if you want a reminder.
