Last night we were woken up by roaring in the plain behind camp. Euzebio and Samuel raced out in the landrover to see who it was. Over the years we have caught four lions in exactly the same spot. I could see them stop the car not far from camp from our bamboo deck and they soon arrived back to say it was an old male lion. One of the males we have been looking for for months. Out we all went and we managed to dart him and put a satellite radio collar on him so that we can see where he goes during this next wet season A beautiful old lion with worn teeth, two half broken canines and a pulp cavity showing on one of his remaining canines. He has very deep but clean wounds on his front leg, it looks like it was made by the horn of a buffalo or sable a few days ago. Not much we could do other than put some antiseptic spray on it. I imagine this old lion could tell so many stories judging by his scars. Will be interesting to see how he fits in here as while he is old (over 8 years) he was roaring and has been spray marking. Is he the pride male for the two new females? What a great way to end the dry season. Go well, lion and well done Euzebio and Samuel, their hard work and dedication has paid off. Euzebio wanted special pictures taken of him and this lion I have been working so hard to find you all year.
