Last night with Bristow Nigeria. Lots of people have asked how long I’ve been down here… I started flying for Bristow when I was still in my 20s, I had a wonderful girlfriend (who is now my awesome wife), Al Gore had just won the Nobel Peace Prize and Northwest was still an active airline. I remember fellow passengers on the mostly empty NWA 757 from AMS to JFK being mightily impressed by my portable DVD player with 16hrs of battery life. In short, I’ve been here a long time…longer than many, and shorter than many more. As much as I have complained about Bristow, and at times the frustration meter have been off scale high for long periods, there is no denying that I owe the company and people I have met in Nigeria a lot. PAAN and Bristow took me in off the street with 2000hrs and a dream…and they are spitting me out on the other side with almost 6000hrs and a career. Who can ask for more than that? So I can only extend my most heartfelt thanks to the guys that made this wild ride in Nigeria bearable. Guys and gals who were in the trenches with me as a line pilot in Escravos, who supported and guided me as Chief Pilot, and who showed me the ropes of PH and the 76. I’ve met and worked with wonderful (and not so wonderful) people from all over the world, and I am the richer for it. There are so many stories that could, and probably shouldn’t, be told, but I’m sure we’ll share some of them over a beer somewhere…sometime. I’m done packing, about to check in…and I’m ready to cast off for new adventures. To paraphrase Douglas Adams: So long, and thanks for all the chicken.
