Last nights entries in the October #horrormoviemarathon included Alexander Ajas new Horns, based on the novel by Joe Hill (Stephen Kings son) and 1971s Wake in Fright. Probably Ajas best film, Horns is a magical realistic moral play, mystery, and King-esque horror rolled into one. Definitely recommended. Also recommended is Wake in Fright, an Australian film by Ted Kotcheff (who would later make Rambos First Blood). A complex, spiraling fever dream in which an English intellectual falls deep under the spell of an engrained, cultural barbarism in the outback that culminates in a horrific kangaroo hunt. The movie has long been out of print and considered highly controversial for the hunt scene which features the actual slaughter of dozens of kangaroos. Part of the reason for the films existence at the time was to raise awareness of the government sanctioned killing of kangaroos, Australias national animal.
