Last orders (The Talbot Hotel - Corner of Commercial Street/Charles Street) The Talbot finally closed its doors on 30th March 1960 to make way for a new Woolworths Store. The last major event to be held there was the annual dinner of the Newport Swimming Club, who had hosted their inaugural dinner there more than sixty years previously. Mr Tom Jones, landlord of the Talbot for the final five years of its existence, along with his wife had helped to build up the hotel into one of the most flourishing public houses in Newport and although a brewery representative was saddened to see the demise of such an old and historic pub, he did concede that it was in the best interests of the town and that other hotels in the area were to be improved in order to accommodate the trade from the Talbot.
