Last week I have attended public hearings by Climate Legislative and Executive Workgroup that has happened at Bell Harbor Conference center in Seattle governor.wa.gov/issues/economy/climateWorkgroup/default.aspx The good news is that such thing exists and that about 600 people attended, hearings lasted for 3 hours and every speaker had 2 minutes to speak. The bad news is that majority of speeches were of 3 categories: my company has product __ that increases energy efficiency; do not allow coal trains, save cute __ animals and environment; climate change is not caused by humans, lets worry about jobs; And only 3 or 4 speakers ‘get it’ and were talking that problem is NOT economical but prevention of humanitarian catastrophes. And not for future generations, but for us, as one speaker said: we are the first generation that will directly feel ill effects of climate disruption leading scientists were warning us since 1930th. However majority of environmentalist arguments are not framed properly: - they say ‘no business on dead plane’ - that understandably triggers BS sensor, we are unlikely to kill entire planet - ecosystem will rebound and will continue to thrive but without us ( look how well it does in Chernobyl zone). Instead we should talk about adverse effects of toxins, potent microbes, and reduced bio diversity on us, humans; - human made climate change - again it triggers BS sensor - climate change is human _caused_, as a building destruction is caused by a single person triggering a bomb. We just releasing gianourmous amount energy that was collected and stored by our planet for millions of year, we triggering that carbon bomb which nature planted. math.350.org/ There are more hearings will happen, make democracy work - attend those and make your voice heard. And ask pointed questions: like, are greenhouse reduction goals in line with scientific consensus? When we abandon fuel tax as revenue source because it creates conflict of interest and disincentivize prevention of traffic jam?
