Last week, Marye Jo and I had to make an unexpected trip to Dallas - TopicsExpress

Last week, Marye Jo and I had to make an unexpected trip to Dallas for a funeral. We listened to a book-on-tape about a woman named Emma Gatewood that gives a whole new meaning to the term Ultra. She didnt run but in 1955, at the age of 67, Grandma Gatewood through-hiked the AT alone to become the first woman to complete the trail. She had no tent, no sleeping bag, no support except the kindness of people along the way and wore Keds. Her family didnt even know where she was. She told them she was going for a walk! She carried her supplies (12 to 15 lbs at most) in a bag over her shoulder. She became quite a celebrity. Seems once was not enough and she hiked the AT again in 1960 and in 1963 at the age of 75 although the 63 hike was in stages. Its a fascinating and inspiring book and I highly recommend it. Im surprised Jim Barns hasnt tried to set a new through hike record for men 75+ on the AT.
