Last week in TN, todays windy and chilly so I find a good spot to run the dogs in a WMA, which my TN hunting license allows me to use. Since its also the same spot for local brace and UBGF clubs, it was good that we had it to ourselves for a while. Dogs ran good and put rabbits in holes after some good runs. One cottontail ran across a burned-off field for more than 300 yards and it was nice to watch them work that with the wind blowing and all. They did great. As we were walking out, the dogs were up the hill a ways and I hear another pack of hounds open up just about the time I hear mine hark in with them. Theyre screaming. The other guy calls his dogs in while I find mine on a bank of wet yellow clay digging furiously. After we get back together I expect this meeting will not go well from what Ive heard of the way they like to run in this part of the country. Nope. Turns out he retired here 18 years ago from NH and has dogs out of one he bought from Vic Costanza and another from Mike Blair. He thought the same as I about mixing packs down here. We know a lot of the same people and had a great chat. He was happy to have some hare hounds run with his for a change and Im happy to have made another new beagling friend on this trip. But now I have to give the dogs baths. Still a good day.
