Last week the music community of West Michigan lost one of its - TopicsExpress

Last week the music community of West Michigan lost one of its own. Johnny Griffes passed away unexpectedly on the West Coast at the crazy young age of 42. John was, justifiably, well loved by his musical friends and fans. He was an active member of many bands, had a great voice and played a very mean guitar. My connection with John was mostly at my annual musical event, the Hometown Rock Music Search (1988-2005) at the Orbit room where he played in the band Spooley in 1995 and later in Molly in the early 2000s (who played the event at least twice, if not three times - I just cant remember). I could always count on Molly (which also included members Todd Long and John Kochans) to play a raw, tight, energetic and highly visual fun set. They never once disappointed me or anyone who attended. Thanks to our brilliant IT guy, Marc Hill at Clear Channel radio (where I worked on-air), I luckily have a recorded set of Molly from the Finals night of the Rock Search in 2001. Marc, who was way ahead of the curve suggested we stream the 2001 event on the Internet. This was very early on, long before most people had broadband, so it was a somewhat risky, but very cool idea. I loved the fact that we could share some of West Michigans best musicians to anyone on the planet who wanted to listen in. Thankfully, those sets were archived on CD so we could loop the event over and over on the Net for the next few weeks. And even more fortunate, I found those CDs last night buried in a box. So, for those that missed that night (December 7, 2001) at the Orbit room and for those close friends of Johns who have a heavy heart right now, Im pleased to be able to post Mollys entire set below. Its in 4 parts with parts 2-4 as the first 3 comments in this thread. These recordings were never fully mixed - we had a separate 2-channel feed for the Internet. The mix for the room and for the patrons who attended the event, took precedence, so with this Internet feed we just set it and hoped for the best. With that in mind, Im quite surprised at how good this flat mix for the Internet stream came out. I spent an hour last night tweaking and mastering it, so I think it sounds pretty good. Give a listen. Molly had a huge following here in West Michigan. They deservedly made it to the Finals that night and this set will show you why. ------------- (These files are rated R for language.
