Last week, we featured a number of videos on the subject of timeless beauty in art and architecture versus soulless modernism and the present-day cult of ugliness. The video posted below nicely encapsulates how, when the Saints first arrived in Salt Lake, they endeavoured to build a city of majestic beauty, all under the guidance of their visionary leader, the greatest of all the prophets, Brigham Young. Many of the early Saints had great skill as builders and stonemasons. When I visited Salt Lake City in 1999, I was struck by how many Historicist marvels still stood in this great city, long after other North American cities (including our own Hamilton) had torn down much of their glorious 19th-century built heritage and replaced it with cold, glass-and-steel brutalism. Incidentally, the building at 1:22 in the video is the mighty Granite Stake Tabernacle, a stunning edifice that, insanely, was razed in the 1950s (a rare example of architectural vandalism in SLC). https://youtube/watch?v=uE9zyektX2g
