Last weekend I watched this documentary. It was powerful for me. By Wednesday I had spoken with Dr Jennifer Conrad, the veterinarian that began the The Paw Project. This documentary really did not teach me anything I did not already know. It just gave me the courage to say NO to something that has NEVER felt right to me. It is against our National Governing Bodys By-Laws to dock puppy tails and crop their ears. Now it is time to stop declawing cats. Our veterinary oath is first of all, do no harm. We must be advocates for our feline friends and teach ourselves and others how to live in harmony with them. Veterinarians must only be helpful to our patients. Declawing in no way benefits the cat - so why do it? I believe that when we know better we do better. Although I had declawed my own cats early in my career, I had decided never to do it again to one of my own about 18 years ago. I do counsel clients against the surgery and offer alternatives, but I still would offer it as a service. Today I promise, with my hand on my heart, that I will never declaw another cat. And to my first cats, Wicket, Bart and Rascal, I am truly sorry. Dr Tracy Radcliffe, my practice associate, feels as strongly as I do regarding this issue. We will no longer offer declawing as a service at Brandon Animal Clinic and we stand proud as we say this!! We WILL offer counseling for living with clawed cats. We will teach people about trimming claws properly and using products like Soft Paws. Much more information to follow regarding this. Please share this information to any of your animal advocate friends. Time to speak up for these kids!
