Last weeks attack on French publication Charlie Hebdo saw world leaders condemn the massacre and solidarity marches around the world. Yet, 177 journalists are currently imprisoned for their line of work, according to not-for-profit organisation, Reporters Without Borders. Saudi Arabia was among the nations to condemn the killings, however, Friday saw Saudi Arabian blogger Raif Badawi receive the first 50 of 1000 lashes handed down by Saudi courts for blasphemy, after he created an online forum for diverse views to be expressed freely. In July last year, Badawis lawyer Waleed Abu al-Khair was also sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for his work as a human rights defender. La Trobe journalism student Maggie Triantafillou explores the ensuing global outcry against the sentence handed to Badawi in this piece for The Global Panorama.
