Last working Tuesday for Teamwork/Get Growing! What a way to end a summer of new learning and new experience. A bright and sunny Tuesday it was as were, greeted by Felicia and her three dogs, at Three Dog Farm! Her work there is inspiring! The students were really put to the test this final week! Felicia showed us around her gardens, chicken coop and greenhouse. The students were asked to help figure out why one section of the garden did not produce as expected. Using skills learned this summer, students collected soil samples and tested for PH levels and determined one area was too alkaline and needed some peat. Then they set out to competitive stirrup hoeing, as they quickly weeded rows, showing off their skills. Next we all thinned and harvested some pretty awesome looking carrots! Who knew they came in so many colors? Purple, white, orange and yellow! Everyone enjoys harvesting! Snack time provided the opportunity to wash off our lovely carrots and to shell some peas from their pods. What a tasty treat! Everyone had a laugh as we used the pods to pretend we had green lips! After snack, we took our watermelon rinds and our pea pods shells and brought them to the chickens. Chickens love watermelon! Students were able to see chickens up close and collect some eggs to take home, after thoroughly washing and learning about Salmonella. What a wonderful experience and what a great day at Three Dog Farm! Thank you Felicia!
