Late for the mating season but undaunted, a ruffed grouse - TopicsExpress

Late for the mating season but undaunted, a ruffed grouse balloons, filling his lungs and gathering himself for birdsong. Following introductory chip notes, he launches into a duet with himself—alternately trembling out dry cheeps then stilling to let slip soft whistles. As his torch song builds in volume and tempo, he leaves off his whistles in favor of increasingly fervent, head shaking cheeps then crescendos with a goose honk as he sets into motion, tail feathers rising. Before accelerating into the underbrush, he slows for respite, his fanned wings bowed. Tor Bertin Alan Ramsey
