The death toll in Spain’s worst train accident in four decades rose to 77 on Thursday, as investigators focused on whether excessive speed was to blame. 73 of the victims were killed immediately after the high-speed train derailed in the North-west of the country while four died at hospital, according to sources at the Galician Superior Court. About 130 people were injured, many of them seriously. Five were reported to be in coma. As two large cranes worked to remove the wreckage, it was thought possible that more victims could still be trapped inside the torn and toppled cars.
