Latur is a medium sized town , about 4 lac population in South-East Maharashtra in the Marathwada region . Latur had a devastating earthquake in 1993 resulting in a huge loss of life. The city is a major sugarcane and edible oils, soyabean, grapes and mango production center. Its College of Agriculture has a festival , and there is a competition of folk dances . The below video from last year shows the almost rock-concert reactions of the audience to the energy of the group performance of the Dindi dance , which is a religious folk dance expressing religious ecstasy.Traditionally to show their gratitude to the Sun God and Lord Hanuman, dancers usually carry flags while visiting the temple. People of this region, the dancers in particular, believe that Dindi dance virtually opens the gates of heaven for them. India has thousands of small towns and we in the big metros have no idea how the youth cultures there are evolving . There is almost no visible Bollywood influence either in the song , the music or the dancing .
