“Lay Low, Get Strong” Every time you move from job to job, relationship to relationship, project to project, or location to location, you are zero-basing—you’re starting from scratch. What you think might be a step forward is actually two steps back, because before we ever reach any meaningful achievement, we must go through a season in the wilderness, because it’s in that season that we’re hidden away, getting worked over, and truly preparing for personal dominion. It’s difficult to do that if you’re not planted some where for an extended period of time. For example, people have often commented to me, “C. J., where did you come from? It’s like you just fell out of the sky.” What they mean is that they’re not familiar with my personal history, so it’s as if I appeared out of thin air. The reality is that I’ve spent the last quarter century doing some version of what I do now, but during that time, I was running a business, raising a family, and mastering my skills. I was laying low, but I was getting strong.
