Leadership NIMC: Reps Fear Registration Of Foreign Terrorists As Nigerians Adesuwa Tsan And Edegbe Odemwingie — June 5, 2014 The House of Representatives yesterday raised the alarm that “illegal immigrants who may be terrorists” will be enrolled as Nigerians if security checks are not tightened in the ongoing registration of citizens by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). This was a fallout of a motion sponsored by Hon Uzo Azubuike entitled, “Urgent need for NIMC to excercise due diligence against registration of foreigners resident in Nigeria as Nigerians”. Azubuike (Abia/PDP) in lead debates reported that in the ongoing enrolment exercise in some centres in Abuja, more than 1,000 persons with “doubtful origin” as Nigerians claimed to hail from a community outside the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and were enrolled as such, without further identification or verification. “Given the current security situation in the country and the presence of illegal immigrants assisted by our porous borders, the ongoing NIMC registration/enrolment is conducted in such a manner that there are no security measures put in place to ensure that foreigners in Nigeria are not registered as Nigerians,” the lawmaker stated at yesterday’s plenary. He added: “Without due diligence and adequate security measures, the implication of registering immigrants as Nigerians are far reaching as illegal immigrants who may be terrorists would be enrolled as Nigerians”. To this end, the House in its resolution urged NIMC to exercise due diligence in its ongoing registration exercise by putting in place security measures that can confirm the nationality of every person seeking registration.
