Left us on this day (Jan. 19) in 2006: American R&B, soul & rocknroll singer & songwriter Wilson Pickett (heart attack, age 64), responsible for some of soul musics greatest recordings, including In the Midnight Hour, Land of 1000 Dances, Ninety Nine & a Half Won’t Do, Mustang Sally & Funky Broadway; he recorded over 50 songs that reached the US R&B charts & frequently crossed over to the Pop charts as well; Wilson was one of the roughest & sweatiest of performers, working up some of the decades hottest dancefloor grooves - he is a favorite of fans who like their soul on the raw side; he was inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame in 1991 & was honored with a Pioneer Award by the Rhythm & Blues Foundation in 1992; he made a comeback in 1999 with the album Its Harder Now, which was nominated for a Grammy award; Wilson spent the twilight of his career playing dozens of concert dates every year until 2004, when he began suffering from health problems…
