Left us on this day (Jan. 4) in 2011: Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty (liver failure, age 63), who scored several hits throughout the ’70s & ’80s, most notably the US #2 & UK #3 Baker Street (featuring one of the most instantly recognizable openings in pop music, it was still bringing in an annual £80,000 in royalties more than 30 years after its 1978 release) & Right Down The Line, both from classic album City to City; he had first teamed up with future actor/comedian Billy Connolly in The Humblebums, then formed Stealers Wheel (1973 US #6 & UK #8 Stuck In The Middle With You) with Joe Egan; Gerry released several more solo albums, but none would match his initial success; his final LP, Life Goes On, was issued in 2009; in 2012, Gerrys hometown of Paisley paid tribute by naming a street Gerry Rafferty Drive; the biography Stuck in the Middle with Gerry Rafferty was published in 2013…
