Left us on this day (Nov. 6) in 1989: Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler (complications from a gunshot injury, age 49), best remembered as the Green Beret medic who served for the US Army in Vietnam & then co-wrote & sang lead on Ballad of the Green Berets in 1966; ironically, the pro-military song became a US #1 hit on RCA Victor during an era mostly associated with the anti-war movement; the song remained at the top of the charts for five weeks & sold approximately nine million copies; later the same year he landed one follow-up hit, the similarly patriotic-themed The A Team, which reached US #28; Barry later became a published author, penning more than 20 military-themed adventure books…
