Left us on this day (Sept. 24) in 2013: Pat Fear (Bill Bartell, undisclosed causes, age 52), best remembered as the singer & guitarist for influential Los Angeles-area punk band, White Flag; formed in 1982 in antithesis to the angrier SoCal punk outfits, they adopted such parody names as Jello B. Affro, Mike Mess & Pat Fear; the band released two seminal albums in their first two years, R is for Rocket & S is for Space, while performing steadily throughout California; over the next three decades, they issued over a dozen albums plus several EPs & singles; over time, the lineup included members who went on to play in other notable bands, including Jim Laspesa (The Muffs, Dave Davies), Greg Hetson (Redd Kross, Circle Jerks), Steven Shane McDonald (Redd Kross), Kim Shattuck (The Pandoras, The Muffs), Ken Stringfellow (The Posies) & Eric Erlandson (Hole); a lifelong music fanatic, Pat was known to champion other up-and-coming musicians & bands - two of his favorites were Os Mutantes (Brazil) & Shonen Knife (Japan), both of whom he helped undertake their first US tours; during breaks from White Flag, Pat worked as a police reservist & bull rider…
