Left us on this day (Sept. 26) in 2003: English singer, songwriter & guitarist Robert Palmer (heart attack, age 54), noted for his distinctive voice & the eclectic mix of musical styles on his albums, combining soul, jazz, rock, pop, reggae & blues; he first came to prominence singing with The Alan Bown Set on a 1969 single & album, before forming large-format country-blues-R&B-roots band band, Vinegar Joe, with Elkie Brooks in 1971; they released three critically-acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful early-70s albums before disbanding in 1974; as a solo artist, Robert was best known for his 1986 US #1 & UK #5 Addicted To Love & the 1988 hit Simply Irresistible, accompanied by iconic 80s music videos; he also sang with The Power Station (Duran Duran members Andy Taylor & John Taylor, with former Chic drummer Tony Thompson), scoring a 1985 US #6 with their self-titled debut album; Robert won two Grammy Awards for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, an MTV Video Music Award & was twice nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male…
