Greaves (prostate cancer, age 68), best remembered for his 1969 hit Take A Letter Maria; a cousin of Sam Cooke, Ronald Bertram Greaves was born on an American Air Force base in Guyana, grew up on an Indian Reservation in the US & eventually moved to the UK to futher his career; his Take A Letter Maria was initially recorded by both Stevie Wonder & Tom Jones; R.B.s 69 version shot to US #2 & went on to sell well over two million copies by the end of 1970; he followed that with a series of covers that also charted at a lower level, including his versions of Bacharach/Davids (Theres) Always Something There to Remind Me & Procol Harums A Whiter Shade Of Pale…
