Legazpi City, Albay/Quezon City — The provincial government of Albay, with the help of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), has achieved its evacuation target as of yesterday and prepared the immediate needs of families affected by possible eruption of Mayon Volcano. Meantime, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the number of volcanic earthquakes it has been recording on a day-to-day basis increased four-fold overnight. From only 38 volcanic earthquakes in its previous 24-hour observation, Phivolcs has recorded 142 volcanic earthquakes at Mayon Volcano from Wednesday to Thursday. Meanwhile, 251 rockfall events occurred from 277, previously. The restive volcano remains under Alert Level 3 as hazardous eruption is still imminent in a matter of weeks. Phivolcs also observed a moderate emission of white steam plumes that drifted south-southwest. It also continues to emit a significant amount of sulfur dioxide. “The volcano is exhibiting relatively high unrest due to the movement of potentially eruptible magma,” Phivolcs said. Governor Joey Salceda, also Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) chairman, said the total individuals evacuated from the towns of Guinobatan, Malilipot, Camalig and Daraga, including cities of Ligao and Tabaco is now 36,119 or 7,575 families. They are being housed in 18 evacuation centers. Salceda has requested for augmentation assistance from the DSWD that includes 8,964 bags of rice to feed 10,546 families for 17 days. Based on DSWD data, a total of P735,172 worth of family food packs, assorted food items, and assorted non-food items have been provided to the provincial government of Albay.
