Lenten Rice Bowl is the annual Len- ten program of Catholic Relief Services (CRS) that helps people around the world. But this program has a local impact as well according to Omar Gutierrez, manager of the archdiocese’s Office of Missions and Justice. Simply by slipping money through coin sized slits in cardboard boxes that are distributed through our religious education program, school and parish, people across the archdiocese donated $60,000 last year. And 25% or about $15,000 stayed in the archdiocese and was distributed to groups such as the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and area food banks, which in turn helped people who were financially struggling to pay utility bills, rent and provide food for their families. “CRS Rice bowl is crucial to our responsibility to show solidarity with the poor around the world. In addition to filling the boxes with change, fasting and prayer are encouraged through the program sponsored by CRS, the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States.
