Lepcha community stage sit-in demanding normalcy in Hills (darjeelingtimes) Kurseong, 29 August: Under the banner of Hills’ People, around 200 people mostly from the Lepcha community have staged a sit-in at Tricone Park in Kalimpong, demanding immediate restoration of normalcy and peace in the Hills. Dwelling on the objective of the sit-in, the Hills’ People leader Mr Nima Lepcha said people from all walks of life have remained at the receiving end of the restiveness dragging on. “We want normalcy to be immediately restored in the Hills,” Mr Lepcha said. Asked whether normalcy means withdrawing of the bandh and removal of the CRPFs from the Hills, Mr Lepcha said they just want normal life to resume here. “We are not against anybody. Nor are we against Gorkhaland,” Mr Lepcha added. According to the observers, the sit-in by the community the state government is out to endear itself to in order to step up heat on the GJMM is significant. “However, the Lepcha community asserting itself despite being a marginalised minority is a new phenomenon in the realm of Hill politics. It is to be seen whether they would keep their moorings intact in the coming days, particularly when there is a possibility of a Gorkha backlash to re-establish its supremacy,” an observer said.
