Lesson/take-away from a playground. Taking my 6 year old son Zan - TopicsExpress

Lesson/take-away from a playground. Taking my 6 year old son Zan snowboarding today we stopped at a playground in Milton. On one of the climbing/slide apparatus there was a telescope. Funny though, it didnt have any magnification of course so when you looked up at The Escarpement it was the same distance as with the naked eye...But... It would be focused on what was in the view finder so you had the sense you were seeing it more clearly as there were no peripheral distractions. In case youre not extrapolating the used this for us as constantly advancing guitarists let me explain. Say you want to really understand and master that ominously named and somewhat exotic sounding Phrygian mode. After seeing derivation as 3rd mode of major scale ( built from 3rd degree ie. in C, Phrygian starts on E, giving you e,f,g,a,b,c,d. Degree wise this is: 1,b2,b3,4,5,b6,b7 Then alsolearn its step pattern to better faciliate transposing it to any key: h,w,w,w,h,w,w. Finally understand it in context or what progression it best suits. It is a minor mode so a minor i chord that usually goes to a flat II chord ie. em-F. Play the crap out of it over a jam track and find tunes that use it to hear it played effectively. That is focused and thorough understanding of one single concept. Who knew a kids playground could help us play better?
