Lessons learned while traveling, April 2014 edition: 1) Salt Lake City smells sulfurous. 2) Ear filters are NOT just Really Expensive Earplugs(TM). If anything, they amplify noise. 3) When airline attendants tell an airplane full of people that theyre delighted youve chosen [National airline company] theyre reading a script. There was nothing delightful about the way they told us the rules for buckling seat-belts or returning our seats and tray tables to the LOCKED position. Which works out fine, since choosing [National airline company] was entirely based on the lowest price Expedia could find for me. 4) Chicago \ne Gotham City. But my eyes are still peeled for the Batman. 5) Fancy external elevators made entirely of WINDOWS looking over the city are unnecessary. Ill take claustrophobia over acrophobia any day. 6) Growing up in a small town has impeded my knowledge of Rules for Tipping. I see money changing hands for all kinds of reasons (sheltered paranoia makes me assume there are drug deals happening all around me, instigated primarily by badly dressed middle aged women. Youll be happy to know how many times I have NOT involved the DEA). Is it really necessary to pay the man who scrambled my eggs for complimentary breakfast? Why did my fellow passenger offer up a $5 bill when our shuttle, advertised as a 20 minute commute between OHare and the hotel downtown, took over an hour? Does my lack of cash identify me as a country bumpkin? No matter. In the words of Dwight Schrute, why tip someone for something I can do myself? Or maybe Jasons Dutchness is contagious.
