Lets Talk About Food 101. Theres nothing more basic and complex than the relationship between dogs, humans and food. To understand the relationship, lets go back 15,000 years to mountains of Eastern Turkey or perhaps steppes of Central Asia. We do know that most modern dogs ancestors (and certainly poodle ancestors) were grey wolfs. However what remains unclear is how domestication took place. Theres a possibility that wolfs discovered that humans discard plenty of meat that could sustain them at the time of need. But most scientists believe that humans took orphaned pups (probably because they looked cute) and provided much needed nutrition. Perhaps a family of nomads took a cute little pup to give the kids a playmate, or perhaps they took the pup out of pity. We will never know since there were no Instagram 15,000 years ago. We do know that what kept those pups with their new family was food that was consistently provided to them. Nothing cemented the relationship between the domesticated wolf pups and humans more than scraps of meat (and later wheat) given to them regularly. While some of todays dogs are capable of hunting, most couldnt care less about catching prey themselves. They know that humans will provide for them and they will do what it takes to get fed. Essentially our canine friends feel that pleasing people is their job and getting fed is their compensation. Most, if not all dogs, are driven to do well and please people. They have plenty of energy and enthusiasm to get the job done. Its up to people to give them the tools to succeed.
