A DONKEY VOTE is when a person votes (either above or below the line) by writing 1 next to the first candidate that appears at the top of the ballot, and continues numbering candidates in the order they appear. These votes DO count. An INFORMAL VOTE is when people choose not to vote - maybe they leave their ballot blank, maybe they write abuse all over it, either way, this vote does NOT count - and it doesnt go to the winning candidate either - another misconception.
