Lets talk about this. I agree on many, if not all, the points on this article. My thoughts... 1. A home is not an asset. While a great benefit, most peoples homes are not earning them money every month, year, etc. I fell into that trap. This is not to say I will never buy a home again. I am saying that if I had a choice between an investment (property) and a house, the investment would most likely win. 2. Wealth-building happens when you invest in the market. From the article: White median net worth is down by only 16%, while black median net worth is down by 50%. This is because the stock market has significantly rebounded and compensated for whites’ losses in home equity, but blacks, without comparable stock investments, have not benefited. 3. I am studying for my first securities/investment license as I write this. Why? Many reasons, including 1) I am a business woman who wants to build generational wealth. You cannot win at the game if youre not in it. 2) My family and my people NEED this information. 3) Article >> ...the securities industry is overwhelmingly white. Recent data show that fewer than 6% of Wall Street professionals are black. Link: forbes/sites/forbesleadershipforum/2012/12/10/how-home-ownership-keeps-blacks-poorer-than-whites/
